Green roof sustainability challenge -

A CSR initiative driving the commitment to operate in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner whilst balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders.

Background

Swire’s new office in Beijing has a phenomenal rooftop nearly 1600 sq. m. in size that is presently not utilized. Swire is looking for potential solutions to develop this area into an exceptional community / event / urban farm space that demonstrates to all its stakeholders Swire’s vision and innovation in sustainability.

Some of the ideas being explored include:
  • Organizing workshops and talks on the farm.
  • Engaging with local schools and charities over the beauty of nature and how it can be brought into city life.
  • An evening event/dining space hosting special events.
  • A demo ground for innovative energy efficiency technologies.

The key motives are to demonstrate through design and ingenuity on how sustainability can be trendy, aspirational and more importantly benefit Swire’s staff with encouragement, thus motivating them to behave in a more sustainable manner.

The case presents a real life challenge which is not unique only to Swire. The study can be specific to Swire’s case but can also be widened to cover the issue by providing a replicable and scalable model. This initiative would foster the best use of unutilized spaces with a CSR initiative in mind allowing benefits to both the company and the society in turn. The applicability is therefore high.

The Challenge

Your challenge is to make use of your business/technical knowledge to create a business model for development that is creative, feasible and is a cost effective solution to the case.

You can choose to explore and develop on the ideas mentioned or devise your own unique and innovative solution/s to the challenge.

For Round 1, the solutions would be judged on areas such as knowledge, innovation, practicality, scalability and most importantly its impact.
